Description
Woodlawn Country Club was chartered in 1914 and plans were drawn up for the clubhouse and the first nine holes which were completed in 1916. H.W. Head, F.O Dillard and H.G. began the task of building a golf course and sought the advice of A.S. Baxter, designer of the Dallas Country Club. Baxter inspected a parcel of land between Sherman and Denison and advised the group to build the course on the current location. The clubhouse was built 8 years later and in 1927 a swimming pool was added.
In 1967 Read Omohundro and PGA Touring Pro Miller Barber bought the club and expanded it to 18 holes. They were business partners for many years and best of friends until Reads death in 2003. The Omohundro family continues to operate the club. The golf course has changed over the years, several holes have been redesigned or relocated, more than 40 bunkers have been added, and irrigation fro the fairways was installed with water provided by the club's own lake.
