Omni Hotels & Resorts Celebrates Milestone First Year of Generation Cup With Strong Momentum for Year Two

'First of its Kind' Family-Focused Golf Tournament Draws More Than 700 Participants Across Golf Portfolio

By Brian Weis

Omni Hotels & Resorts, the official hotel partner of the PGA TOUR and PGA of America, proudly celebrates the conclusion of its inaugural Generation Cup, a first-of-its-kind golf tournament series designed to bring families together.

The Generation Cup featured 12 qualifying events and a National Championship hosted at Omni's premier golf resorts nationwide. Launched at Omni Interlocken Hotel & Spa in May 2024 and culminating at Omni Amelia Island Resort this past April, the Generation Cup drew more than 700 participants. Competition concluded with the National Championship held May 30 to June 1 at Omni PGA Frisco Resort & Spa.

With the format of the event a two-person modified best ball "shamble" in both gross and net scoring, families competed in multiple divisions designed to highlight multi-generational connections, including Grandparent & Grandchild, Parent & Child (or Aunt / Uncle & Niece / Nephew), and PGA Professional & Family Member.

The winning teams of the National Finals in the PGA Professional & Family Member division were Ryan Peffer and Fred Apple (gross) / Gina and Bob Umeck (net). The Grandparent & Grandchild division winners were Craig and Welker Falgout (gross) / Charlie Glazener and Jackson Mathis (net). The Parent & Child victorious teams were Brent and Carson Will (gross) / John and Samuel Rush (net).

"Golf presents a wonderful opportunity to invest quality time with loved ones and create long-lasting family memories while out on the course," says Kurt Alexander, President of Omni Hotels & Resorts. "My dad and I have spent hundreds of hours together playing golf. The Generation Cup celebrates and encourages these important family ties, and we look forward to the upcoming series as we build on the success of our inaugural season."

The participants in the inaugural Generation Cup were universal in their praise of taking part in the unique family event: "It was a once in a lifetime event enjoyed with my 12-year-old grandson. Doesn't get any better than that!"; "This was a truly exceptional event. I felt like I was playing a PGA Tour event. Simply unforgettable."; "Absolutely loved the whole experience!"; "We hope to come back again next year!"

"Golf is continuing to boom across generational lines for players of all abilities to enjoy the game of a lifetime together," says Spencer Cody, Corporate Director of Club and Golf for Omni Hotels & Resorts. "The Generation Cup signifies our commitment to building the game across our world-class golf destinations while showcasing and strengthening family bonds in this wonderful sport."

Looking ahead and building on the success of the first year of competition, season two of the Generation Cup tees off July 12 on The Old Course at Omni Bedford Springs Resort & Spa, with 12 qualifying events concluding next year on February 28 on the Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National Resort. The National Championship will be contested at Omni Amelia Island Resort in May 2026.

About: Brian Weis

Brian Weis Brian Weis is the mastermind behind GolfTrips.com, a vast network of golf travel and directory sites covering everything from the rolling fairways of Wisconsin to the sunbaked desert layouts of Arizona. If there’s a golf destination worth visiting, chances are, Brian has written about it, played it, or at the very least, found a way to justify a "business trip" there.

As a card-carrying member of the Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA), International Network of Golf (ING), Golf Travel Writers of America (GTWA), International Golf Travel Writers Association (IGTWA), and The Society of Hickory Golfers (SoHG), Brian has the credentials to prove that talking about golf is his full-time job. In 2016, his peers even handed him The Shaheen Cup, a prestigious award in golf travel writing—essentially the Masters green jacket for guys who don’t hit the range but still know where the best 19th holes are.

Brian’s love for golf goes way back. As a kid, he competed in junior and high school golf, only to realize that his dreams of a college golf scholarship had about the same odds as a 30-handicap making a hole-in-one. Instead, he took the more practical route—working on the West Bend Country Club grounds crew to fund his University of Wisconsin education. Little did he know that mowing greens and fixing divots would one day lead to a career writing about the best courses on the planet.

In 2004, Brian turned his golf passion into a business, launching GolfWisconsin.com. Three years later, he expanded his vision, and GolfTrips.com was born—a one-stop shop for golf travel junkies looking for their next tee time. Today, his empire spans all 50 states, and 20+ international destinations.

On the course, Brian is a weekend warrior who oscillates between a 5 and 9 handicap, depending on how much he's been traveling (or how generous he’s feeling with his scorecard). His signature move" A high, soft fade that his playing partners affectionately (or not-so-affectionately) call "The Weis Slice." But when he catches one clean, his 300+ yard drives remind everyone that while he may write about golf for a living, he can still send a ball into the next zip code with the best of them.

Whether he’s hunting down the best public courses, digging up hidden gems, or simply outdriving his buddies, Brian Weis is living proof that golf is more than a game—it’s a way of life.
