So no visit to the great state of Texas would be complete without exploring the National Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock, in the northwest part of the Lone Star State. This outstanding museum allows visitors to mosey through the history of Texas, interacting with authentic historic homes and viewing information-packed exhibits that convey the hardships settlers faced while creating lives for themselves on the plains of Texas. And the docents at this museum are very knowledgeable and friendly.

Another worthwhile place to visit for the historically inclined is the Silent Wings Museum. This unusual facility highlights the roles that military gliders played in World War II and will appeal to those who appreciate ingenuity and daring.

In addition to being home to Texas Tech University, Lubbock was also the home of rock 'n' roller Buddy Holly, and the Buddy Holly Center is a must-visit for fans of this ill-fated musical superstar, as are the Buddy Holly Statue and the West Texas Walk of Fame.

After teeing it up at any of the handful of adequate public courses (Meadowbrook Golf Complex plays to a 120 slope from the tips) or at the three semi-private courses in the area (Pine Valley Golf Course will likely not disappoint), visitors may want to take the edge off by sampling the liquid offerings at Llano Estacado Winery. Or, depending on the state of their games, golfers may want to reverse the order of these activities.
