Laredo's Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course honored by Golfweek

The Max Praised as a Tribute to Local Potential and International Solidarity

The Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course, designed by world-renowned architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr., is highly rated in a recently published course review in Golfweek magazine. Noted golf course design authority and Golfweek's senior writer, Brad Klein, calls The Max "a wonderful course that makes ideal use of the site, and whose setting makes for idyllic golf."

The Max is given high marks for its engaging routing plan with holes that are interwoven alongside arroyos and astride the Rio Grande. The variety and memorability of the par-3 and par-4 holes are especially recognized. Cited as a "tribute to local potential and international solidarity" with Mexico, The Max also is praised for its laudable goals of increasing tourism to Laredo, enhancing the city's image and for providing public recreation and encouraging healthy activity among students at the eight high schools.

"The Max continues to attract national recognition and we were honored that Golfweek magazine's course evaluation and ratings authority, Brad Klein, recently chose to visit and play," said Horacio De Leon, Jr., Assistant City Manager, City of Laredo, Texas. "The City of Laredo is pleased that Golfweek's favorable review praised the fact that The Max is a tribute to local potential and international solidarity. We are achieving something very important with The Max and we anticipate attracting more visitors to experience this exceptional municipal course as its reputation continues to grow."

Earlier this month, Golfweek released its 2013 listing of the Best Municipal Courses in the U.S. and The Max made an impressive debut at No. 40. There are more than 2,000 municipal golf courses in the nation, but only four other Texas courses made the list.

The challenging par-72 course sits on 270 acres along the Rio Grande and it caters to golfers of all ability levels, with five sets of tees available and yardages ranging from 7,069 from the back tees to 4,759 for the forward tees. A provision has been made for competitive tournament
tees to be extended to 7,297 yards, and a dedicated "juniors" teeing area on each hole is
incorporated to increase enjoyment for family play. Learning clinics also are being held and actively promoted at The Max to introduce golf to local residents.
